Overview

Upper Mustang Trekking leads you into the heart of the forbidden Kingdom: Lo Manthang. It used to be part of the Tibetan empire and is therefore closely tied to Tibet: You will experience Tibetan culture, language, and geography. Enjoy Mustang's rugged, mysterious, arid, and haunting wilderness. Significantly, the wind-eroded hills and cliffs make you feel like a lunar landscape. A Kingdom within a Kingdom, Mustang's wealth was derived from its position on the Kali Gandaki – Thak Khola trade route to Tibet.

Upper Mustang was Forbidden to foreigners until 1992; Mustang remains a controlled region that few people visit due to a deliberate cultural and environmental preservation policy. However, this is also why culture is so well-preserved in the former forbidden kingdom. Also, unlike other areas, the unspoiled nature has yet to suffer from excessive tourist inflows. We will explore the exotic walled city of Lo Manthang, the former seat of the King. Discover the King's Palace, surrounded by a maze of gompas and private houses, all enshrined within the city boundary walls. Mustang is one of the few places on Earth that are frozen in time. Therefore, it remains one of the ultimate journeys ever to be made in one's lifetime. The trek allows us to visit all the significant villages en route, giving you first-hand insights into Nepali/Tibetan culture.

You can then download a trip application (in PDF format) and send it to us by mail with two recent passport photos. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 303-507-2530. Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 5:00PM Mountain Time.

Upon receiving your deposit, we will send you a confirmation letter, a detailed trip itinerary, visa information (if required), a travel insurance application and a pre-departure information booklet with a recommended equipment list, suggested reading list and general information needed to prepare for your trip.
